    All Kids can Learn

    All kids can learn

chorus: All kids can learn (2x)

I'll tell you now and you'd best believe

    All kids can learn!

    1. Every kid has their own style

Every kid has their own speed

    Watch them closely for awhile

To find out what they need.

     chorus

    2.Technology can help so much

If we don't forget that human touch

Blend it together, add lights and sound --

You'll have the brightest class around!

    chorus

    3. School can be such a happy place ~

Got to put on a happy face

Now's the moment, so do not wait,

Tell those kids, "I think you're great!"

    chorus

    4. When you've had a productive day

Who learns the most? It's hard to say,

Kids learn from peers and books and you -

When you work together, you'll learn lots too!

    chorus, twice

  • 02:16 Story Lyrics Big Bright Colorful Map
Where the water flows, people will stay for without water, there is no way Where the trees grow tall, leave them alone The roots are deep, it's their home Looking at a big colorful bumpy map A paint-by-numbers like you never seen Out my window is brown, blue and green It's a big bright colorful map! Some roads are straight, made by decree Other roads follow the hills and sea Where the sea meets the shore, land continues below I could show those boats where to go! Looking at a.... That plump white cloud makes a shadow beneath But our plane's shadow so quickly leaves There's a long thin bridge with a necklace of cars -- The next approach will be ours! Landing on a....

    Bumps in the Road

    1. Sometimes I get too busy for my friends But we all know friendship never ends We'll be there to lighten each others' loads
And to help each other over bumps in the road.
    chorus:
Bumps in the road - everyone knows, bumps in the road, gotta take em slow
It takes a friend to lighten that load
And to help you over the bumps in the road.

    2. Those bumps can hurt - they can break your cart
Just like upheavals that can break your heart
You can crawl like a turtle or hop like a toad,
But you just can't get around those bumps in the road!

    chorus

    3. It would be so great if the road were smooth
But there's up and downs when you start to move
To make coffee sweet, you gotta take your lumps
And to make complete, you gotta cross those bumps!

    chorus

Come by Here, Martin Luther King

Come by here, Martin Luther King (3x)

    Your words we sing (2x)

    Darkness cannot drive out darkness

    Only light can do that

    Hatred cannot drive out hatred

    Only love can do that

    Vengeance cannot heal our wounds

    Only justice can do that

Come by here, Martin Luther King

     Your words we sing

     Your life we sing.

  • 02:32 Story Lyrics Dewey Doo Wap
Here are the words of the thinker John Dewey Some think him brilliant, some think him screwy He lived and he wrote 110 years ago But his words are as fresh as dew-y on a rose Dewey doo wap, dewey dewey doo wap dewey doo wap, dewey doo wap He said "Education is a process of living, Not a preparation for future living; Kids need full and ready use Of eyes and hearts and hand So those may be tools Ready for them to command," chorus "School is a form of community life and space to share the rich resources of the human race," He's not so radical, his ideas are not so rare But one century later, do we or don't we dare?
  • 03:08 Story Lyrics Hambone Madeline
Hambone hambone where you been? Round the world and back again In a house in Paris all covered with vines Lived 12 little girls in two straight lines In two straight lines they broke their bread In two straight lines they went to bed They had pillowfights and a lot of fun And Madeleine was the youngest one chorus Together they went to the park and the zoo And all together they ate their food One day the girls had an awful fright Heard someone crying in the middle of the night Sister called for an ambulance in a flurry Took Madeleine away in a hurry When 11 little girls came over to visit Saw Madeleine's scar and said, "What is it?" She said, "It's my appendix scar," And Madeleine became an overnight star She sat contented in a hospital bed With a rabbit-shaped crack overhead Now 11 little girls in two straight lines Are not so happy, every night they whine They cry and whimper and say, "Boo hoo!" Say, "We want to be operated too!"
  • 03:18 Story Lyrics If I was your Team
na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na woah woah If I was your team, you'd love me constantly when I had good years and when I had bad You'd want to be seen wearing my colors Just hearing my name would make you feel glad I'd never be a loser in your book Though you'd tear your hair at my bad plays If I was your team, you'd be true blue to me And you'd never leave me blue this way na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na woah woah If I was your team you would stick with me through all of the lean years as well as the fat Cause you would know that's how the seasons go Any true fan knows that Baby I'm just a simple woman Can't compete with a pack of strong men Guess it don't matter that I am hear for you Though you're really only there for them If I was your queen Maybe you'd worship me Some think that's something to pursue But what I need is more down to earth Cheer for me, I'll cheer for you Tell me, what is love, what is loyalty? Is it to a city? a concept? or a dream? Or could it be to a simple woman Not like a queen, not like a dream, more like a team...

    Learn, Learn, Learn!
From everything, learn, learn learn! In every season, learn, learn learn! There's a truth to every moment under heaven A lesson from joy, a lesson from pain Learning from loss and from gain Learning to look around A simple truth lies waiting in the shadows chorus - Learn! When the cause seems lost and the music has died When friends are few and worries great The one hope that carries on Is that bright flame, the urge to create chorus Like a strong willow, we learn how to bend Learn to let go or try again When to accept and when to fight Love learns from hate And day from night

    Lost in a Book

    Someone got lost today

Got lost in a wonderful way

And she didn’t come back for hours and hours

    I saw her disappear

Turned the page, she was no longer there

She got lost in a book, lost in a book

She got lost in a book, lost in a book

Some said it couldn’t be done

She didn’t think that reading was fun

In a TV world, she was a TV girl

But that little old book just dragged her in

New adventures are about to begin

Now she’s lost in a book, lost in a book

Now she’s lost in a book, lost in a book

    Sitting on the couch

With a blanket round her feet

A girl as nice and sweet as you’d

    Ever hope to meet!

    She’s usually in motion

And when she’s in a crowd

She has a way of talking very LOUD!

But now, she’s in a quiet place

The lamp casts shadows on her face

She is far away, and she’s having a ball

She’s on a journey and the book’s her guide

Dear daughter, have a wonderful ride

Getting lost in a book, lost in a book….

  • 03:30 Story Lyrics Phonological Awareness
Here's a special word, it's phonological awareness Children need to practice it with frequency, not rareness If they do it long enough, they'll show reading preparedness Have you heard the word? It's phonological awareness Smart kid diddle diddle Smart diddle ay (2x) Jimmy couldn't tell at first the "go" and "show" were rhymes His teacher modeled more words and he tried it several times And once he could match sounds like that, when he heard another word, He said, "This is a cinch! It's like another one I've heard." chorus Karen had some pictures and her tutor had some tea Her tutor said, "let's find some pictures starting with a "B"" The tutor found a buffalo and Karen found a bed And soon that sleep buffalo had a big ball and some bread! What makes some kids hear those sounds while others need more time? It's kids who have been read to lots to hear those sounds just fine So if you love a kid a lot, the way to show you care Is read to that kid every day and help them to get there! You would think to teach such things, you'd need a PhD And helping kids to learn it would be way past you and me but reading Poems and singing songs and playing word games gets it done Not only does it help the kids, it happens to be fun!

    Sacajawea

    Sacajawea

Words and music by Kristin Lems

    Sacajawea!!  (4x)

    1.  Shoshone girl light on her feet

Captured by raiders, 11 years old

Sold to a husband, just like a trinket

Far from her family, no rights of her own

    Sacajawea!! (4x)

    2. A cruel French husband, trapper by trade

Approached by some white men heading west

“We’ll hire you both to translate Minataree,”

Said Lewis and Clark, and her husband said “yes.”

    Sacajawea!! (4x)

    3.  In Feburary, Baptiste was born

He was his young mother’s pride and joy

The corps said, “Let’s go, the winter is gone

You must carry along your two month old boy.”

    Sacajawea!! (4x)

    4.  They met Walla Walla, Shoshone, Wanaupans

    Chinookans, Nez Perce and Minataree

Indian nations all along the route

Saw the mother and child and let them all be

    Sacajawea!! (4x)

    5.  5000 miles of hardship and strife

Baby in the cradleboard, forward they moved

Through hailstorms and rapids, illness and despair

    Sacajawea found them food.

    Sacajawea!! (4x)

    6.  Lewis wrote of her greatness, Clark wrote of her skills

She led them to safety countless times

At the journey’s end, they only paid her husband,

Never saw her again, she died at 25.

    Sacajawea!! (4x)

    7.  Sacajawea, what is a life?

Courage and daring while raising your kid

For all of your pain, your hunger and your hurt

Nature never failed you, man’s world did.

    Sacajawea!! (4x)

  • 03:46 Story Lyrics Since Computers have Come to the Schools

Since Computers Have Come to the Schools

    1.  My classroom is getting a computer!

Oh joyous day!  I just can't wait

    We’re finally on a roll

    We’ll get climate control

Even though it's coming 20 years too late!

For the company that sold us the computers

Stood up to the school and held their ground

    If the classroom isn't cool

The machines will find it cruel

And we don't want the poor dears to melt down!

    Hooray for the information age!

Think how our lives have improved

Kids and teachers won't be hot

    Now computers call the shots

Since computers have come to the schools!

    2.  They told me that we are getting windows

I said, "Don't paint them shut, I beg of you!"

    They said, “No, windows 98,”

I said, “Oh, that's really great

    Cause these date back

From prior to World War Two!”

Last night, they did a special cleaning

And vacuumed up each particle of dust

Now we need a new machine

That can only be kept clean

By getting rid of lead and mercury and rust!

    Hooray for the information age!

Think how our lives have improved

Now each classroom's clean and bright

So its PCs sleep well at night

Since computers have come to the schools!

    3.  And business is so public minded

It wants to help our poor schools get ahead

So they donate things quite junky

Their old models, broke and funky

And we thank them, though half the stuff is dead

And since there are no tax breaks to give training

The computers are maintained catch as catch can

So if you’ve got a student

Who can help, it's more than prudent

To exploit them, since there is no other plan!

    Hooray for the information age!

Think how our lives have improved

Now the adults are quite clueless

And the kids make us feel foolish

Since computers have come to the schools!

    4. And someone has made off with the software

So the kids are playing war games and cards

    Or sometimes check the weather

    Or watch rappers’ sites together

New behaviors for teachers to deplore!

More computers can be found in the library

Nine are down, there’s really only one

    And uses that are wrong

In a list that is quite long

But the uses that are right cannot be done!

    Hooray for the information age!

We’re marching ahead, we are no fools

Can’t live with them, nor without them

Sick of trying to learn about ‘em

Now computers have come to the schools!

  • 04:03 Story Lyrics Think about Nothing

    Think about Nothing

    chorus:

Everyone needs to think about nothin’

Clear out the stuffin, now and again

Everyone needs to empty their mind out

So they can find out what life is for them

    1. She was fixed at her desk, staring straight at the screen

And her coworkers wondered, just what was she seein?

So they crept up behind her, what did they come upon?

They found her computer had not been turned on!  She said…

    2. The algebra final was 12 pages long

You’d repeat the whole course if you got 20 wrong

All the students were sweating and trying their best

But one boy named Albert turned in a blank test, and said….

    3. The couple was sitting and planning the day

That their lives would be joined in a more formal way

Till one stared out in space and got taciturn too

The other said, “don’t you love me?” “You know that I do, but….”

    4. The reporters were gathered with cameras and lights

The photographers too, ‘twas a glorious sight

Then up stepped the leaders of all of the lands

They said not a word, smiled, and threw up their hands, and said….

    ZPD Doo Dah!

    ZPD Doo Dah!

    1. ZPD doo dah ZPD Day
That is the zone where new learning holds sway
Plenty of progress heading that way
    ZPD doo dah ZPD Day
    Lev Vygotsky got the notion
    That a teacher should scaffold
    When a student’s slightly baffled
    2. ZPD doo dah ZPD Day
Give lots of openings for children to play
Social exchanges guide them that way
    ZPD doo dah ZPD Day
How can teachers find that level?
    Find a basal, a ceiling,
Till you get that “just right” feeling
    3. ZPD doo dah ZPD Day
Don’t push or hold them back
    A “nudge” is the way
When you’re both learning, it’s time to say
My, we are having a ZPD Day!
